Press Release for Lincoln Shakespeare Company 4th July 2002

Lincoln Shakespeare Company celebrate 10 year anniversary

The Lincoln Shakespeare Company is proud to be celebrating their 10-year anniversary with a calendar to rival that produced by the Royston W.I. in 1999.

The calendar for 2003 depicts a selection of scenes from shows produced by the company in their 10 years of production in a "naughty but nice" theme.

Lisa Melligan, a member of the Company, said, "When we all realised that we were approaching this milestone, we wanted to celebrate with a difference. By producing this calendar, people will undoubtedly smile at the cheeky theme we have chosen. It really is a celebration of the achievement we have made in coming this far and the humour we all possess in the somewhat mad world of acting."

Indeed, from humble beginnings in the upstairs room of a pub in 1992, a group of disillusioned would-be actors met to discuss the possibility of putting on a play that the public would actually want to see, and indeed pay for the privilege.

They toyed with Ayckbourn, Bennett and Wilde and decided upon Shakespeare! The first production was Twelfth Night, and with 35 people in their first audience, the Lincoln Shakespeare Company was born.

The company has since performed 29 plays and is looking forward to its second performance of The Taming Of The Shrew. It currently plays to a 450 strong crowd in the summer at its new home of The Medieval Bishops Palace in Lincoln. The venue is unique and picturesque with the actors performing to the stunning backdrop of Lincoln Cathedral.

Directed by member Liz Lucas, this year's summer performance is very much a traditional one but with a modern twist, with Lisa Melligan playing Katherine and Phil Mead playing Pertruchio. Both actors have been with the company for a number of years. The Taming of the Shrew is a classic piece of Shakespeare where characters are adept at playing the game of love to the bittersweet end.

In support of the 10-year anniversary Select Appointments, Lincoln a local staffing supplier has sponsored the calendar. Manager Linzi Sharman-Smith said "I have been attending performances for 2 years now and feel that the company truly fulfil their vision of making Shakespeare accessible to all. We are thrilled to be able to support them with this fabulously tongue in cheek calendar, which I am sure will encourage more people to attend performances if only to see what the actors look like with their clothes on!"

Tean Butcher, a partner with Wilkin, Chapman, Epton Blades has recently become a member of the Board of Directors after watching the company for a couple of years and said " We are really moving forward and are forming partnerships with organisations such as Select Appointments and the English Heritage who have been hugely supportive in us adopting The Medieval Bishops Palace as our home".

Indeed Charles Rogers the Custodian of the Medieval Bishops Palace is also a long-standing member of the company. "We are thrilled to be playing at such a prestigious location and know that our audience enjoy the ambience and experience of watching us play here".

I would be sure that the Lincoln Shakespeare Company will continue to perform in and around Lincoln to the delight of its audience and think they will be awaiting the next 10 years with as much anticipation.

Performances will run starting with a friends and family celebratory evening priced at £4:00 per ticket on 23rd July. The performance will run, with tickets priced at £7.50 (£5 concessions) from 24th July until 3rd August (excluding Thursdays) all at the Medieval Bishops Palace, Lincoln. Raffle tickets will be sold at each performance with proceeds being donated to the local Women's Centre.
