Press release June 2004

The Lincoln Shakespeare Company presents Twelfth Night

Shakespeare’s fabulous comedy ‘Twelfth Night’ will be brought to the stage at the Medieval Bishops’ Palace in Lincoln from July 27th to August 7th. Also showing at Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire on Sunday 18th July, the play is expected to attract record audiences.

With intertwined plots of shipwreck, love, revenge, and mistaken identity, ‘Twelfth Night’ is the story of Viola who, cast ashore in a foreign country and believing her dear brother to be drowned in the wreck, assumes the identity of a young man, Cesario, and obtains a position as assistant to the Duke Orsino. The duke, quick to see Cesario’s potential as an ambassador, sends ‘him’ to the house of the beautiful Lady Olivia where he is to woo Olivia on behalf of the Duke, who thus far has failed to win her heart. But Cupid has other plans for them: Olivia falls for Cesario – in reality Viola – whilst Viola realises that she loves Orsino, but of course cannot declare it.

Meanwhile, certain of Olivia’s household, spearheaded by her puckish uncle, Sir Toby Belch, plan to bring down the puritanical steward, Malvolio, with an ingenious deception. Toby’s friend, the foolish and foppish Sir Andrew Aguecheek, also fancies his chances with Olivia but, in so doing, finds himself the butt of another round of Sir Toby’s malicious trickery.

The cast, most of whom recently delighted audiences in ‘King Lear’ earlier this year, will be headed by Julie Ellis as Olivia, Chas Rodgers as Orsino, and Alice Brock as Viola. The LSC’s most experienced director, Rob Smith, is intent on making the most of every ounce of the play’s wonderful comic potential. Also taking the part of Malvolio, Rob said: ‘Expect a fast-paced and well-acted summer play in two beautiful outdoor venues. As usual, we will be enjoying ourselves on stage and hope to make it every bit as enjoyable for you, our audience.’

The play opens on Sunday July 18th at Bolsover Castle and then will enjoy a ten-night run at the Medieval Bishops’ Palace, Lincoln from July 27th to August 7th (excluding Thursdays). All performances start at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £9 and £6 concessions. Lincoln ticket outlets are the Lincoln Drill Hall (01522 873894), Goodies Sweet Shop in The Strait, Lincoln (01522 525307), The Whisky Shop, Bailgate, Lincoln (01522 537834) and online at www.littleboxoffice.com.
