Press release April 2006

The Lincoln Shakespeare Company presents Richard III

Richard III is Shakespeare’s most performed play – brought to the stage even more often than Hamlet. In April, Lincoln and county audiences will be able to see an exciting new rendering of this brilliant work when the Lincoln Shakespeare Company perform Richard III for their Spring production. The play will be performed in a three-night run at the Lincoln Drill Hall in the week after Easter. The week before the company will be welcomed back for a one-night performance at the small but famous Spilsby Theatre. In the last week of April, Richard III will be performed for the very special audiences of the Broadbent Theatre, Wickenby.

The Wars of the Roses (the ‘winter of our discontent’) are over – or are they? While King Edward IV and his Yorkist followers, and even some of the defeated Lancastrians, enjoy the newly won peace, the King’s youngest brother, Richard of Gloucester, is quietly, smilingly, and with a brilliant intellect, plotting his course to the throne. He is sixth, arguably seventh, in line to the crown of England but he is not deterred. Making dissimulation an art form, he easily disposes of his older brother, Clarence, while calmly convincing the court that he died by the King’s order. When the ailing King himself dies a few days later, things are looking good. Meanwhile, in his spare time, Richard has wooed Anne, whose husband and father-in-law were but lately killed by – yes, Richard. The scene is set; he cannot fail. While the old Lancastrian queen, Margaret, takes every opportunity to curse her former enemies and to prophesy doom for Richard, he continues to weave a web of charming deception, while picking off, one by one, those who stand in his way or might pose a future threat. But a challenger for the throne is waiting in the wings – the young Earl of Richmond who, though he has fled to France, is building an army of invasion ….

Richard III will be directed by Chas Rodgers, veteran of the LSC; Richard will be played by another well-known actor of the company, the excellent Rob Smith. Chas said, ‘Richard III is a thrilling and exciting play with a wonderful central character and a wealth of other cleverly drawn roles. I have an excellent cast and we are looking forward to making this a memorable production.’

The play will open at the Spilsby Theatre on Thursday 13th April and then will be presented at the Lincoln Drill Hall on three nights from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd April. There will be two more chances to see the play - on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th April at the Broadbent Theatre, Wickenby. All performances start at 7.30 pm.

Tickets are priced at £9-00 and £6-50 concessions. Ticket outlets are: the Lincoln Drill Hall (Tel: 01522 873 894, Fax: 01522 873 890, email: boxoffice@lincolndrillhall.com), the Spilsby Theatre (01790 752 936), and littleboxoffice.com or 01522 538 220 for the Broadbent Performances.
