Pausing nowhere in particular, Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern are tossing coins and the law of probability comes
into serious question. They recall being summoned to the Court in
Elsinore: urgent business, no question asked. En route they encounter
a band of travelling players who have fallen on hard times. Given
their instructions by the King and Queen, they immediately think
of the players as a way to cheer Prince Hamlet up whilst trying
to work out whether he's really mad or not. The performance has
unforseen consequences - at least to them - but then nobody's giving
them much information to go on...
Collaboration between the Lincoln Shakespeare
Company and Converse Theatre has produced an inventiveness, energy,
willingness to share and try out new ideas. Despite the serious
themes - identity, fate, death - we have laughed together a great
deal.
John Bowtell, Director.
